Critical Home Repair Fund

Preserving Affordable Housing Through Critical Home Repairs

As the demand for affordable housing continues to increase, preserving existing affordable housing plays an important role in the continuum of housing affordability. In the Lake Norman region, there are owner-occupied homes that need critical repairs due to their age. If these repairs are not addressed urgently, the homeowners are at risk of being displaced, and it could result in the loss of an affordable dwelling.

The availability of critical home repair funding is essential for preservation efforts. The LKNCDC Critical Home Repair Fund is accessible to partnering organizations aiming to address housing conditions that pose an immediate safety threat to homeowners. These conditions may include failing septic systems, lack of or dangerous heating systems, unsafe structures such as rotting floors or roofs, or hazardous electrical or plumbing. Additionally, the funding can also be used for accessibility modifications that allow homeowners to remain in their homes after an injury or serious illness.

Who Qualifies to Apply for Funds

Non-profit organizations are eligible to apply for funds to carry out the repair work on homes in Huntersville, Cornelius, or Davidson, NC. Click on the Critical Home Repair Eligibility Criteria Document located below for more details.

The homeowners who need repairs should meet the eligibility criteria set by the applying non-profit organization. Although homeowners do not apply directly to the LKNCDC, we can help connect them to appropriate critical home repair providers or assist them with the application process required by the critical home repair provider.

The Funding Process

Non-profit service providers first complete an “On-Boarding Application,” which is good for 12 months. A PDF application is below for download.

After an On Boarding Application has been completed, a Project Funding Application can be submitted for between $1,500 - $8,000 requests. Funds may be utilized for project materials or administrative costs.  A PDF application is below for download.

If a critical repair cost is less than $1,500 please complete a  small  project application. This application is reviewed on an expedited basis.  It is helpful if an On Boarding application is on file with us when we receive the small project application.

Once the applications and supporting documentation have been reviewed by our Critical Home Repair Fund team, a partnership conversation will be scheduled to finalize a Funding Agreement. Formal estimates may be required before funds are released.

Eligibility & Application

Please review the program eligibility criteria, on boarding, and project funding applications outlined in the PDFs below. For additional information, please contact our office.
